Small Business Tips!

What is emotional intelligence?

Emotional intelligence is an awareness of, and an ability to manage emotions and create motivation.  It is a type of intelligence regarding the emotions, especially in the ability to recognize and understand emotions and their impact on behavior and attitudes.  One who has a high level of emotional intelligence has the ability to perceive and understand personal feelings of those of others.

What does it have to do with business?

In the workplace emotional intelligence can greatly enhance interpersonal communication and people skills. Emotional intelligence means being sensitive and perceptive of other people's emotions and having the ability to facilitate improved performance based on this knowledge.
The modern workplace is characterized by open communication, team work, and a mutual respect among employees and their supervisors.  Possessing emotional intelligence allows managers to better understand and motivate the people they supervise. The old techniques of management by intimidation are becoming less practiced in the workplace due to the unsuccessful ways employees respond to this management style.  If one wants to succeed in the business world now and in the future, it is important to understand the role of emotional intelligence in business today.

December's Question to the Editor!

Do I need a mission statement?
All businesses should write a mission statement because it assists them in clarifying their mission and measuring their performance against it.

Some questions to asses a good mission statement:
  • Does it motivate?
  • Is it compelling?
  • Does it give them the impression that your organization is different from others in your field?
  • What does it tell your reader about you, your company and your chances of future success?
  • Does it clearly say something important about your business to the readers you wish to impact?

Don't forget to send in your questions to info@brownandgold.com!
